The martial art of Siu Lum kung fu
Q.) What makes Siu Lum Kung Fu the ideal choice for my martial arts training?
A.) Siu Lum Canada offers a comprehensive and user-friendly approach to martial arts training. You will learn techniques based on fundamental principles and you will apply those techniques immediately in every class. Understanding those principles and practicing with genuine applications allows for rapid improvement. Combining the application of principles with excellent, personalized coaching from the instructor(s) produces consistent progress.
Q.) How many people are in each class?
A.) Classes never have more than 10 students. This low number allows the instructor(s) to pay attention to every student and help them to learn techniques properly. At Siu Lum Kung Fu students are never packed into crowded groups of 20 or more and left to punch and kick at the air.
Q.) Is there sparring?
A.) Yes. All sparring occurs between a student and an instructor. Sparring with instructors eliminates the risk of injury from another student’s error or enthusiasm. It also allows the instructor to emphasize safety, patience, and control through coaching that is individualized for each student.
Q.) What happens in a class?
A.) A typical 1 hour class consists of a brief warm up, hands-on practice on 2 or 3 techniques, and then either individual practice on forms (sets) or instruction-based sparring. All techniques are functional and effective. There is no flash.
Q.) How much does this training cost? What is included?

A.) Currently our kids class cost $60 per child. Kids’ classes are held twice per week: 7pm on Thursday evening and 3pm on Sunday afternoon.
Q.) What is Qi Gong?
A.) Qi Gong is training to cultivate your internal energy force (chi) through a combination of static postures and dynamic movements.
Q.) Why are there no competitions?
A.) Every technique taught is effective and efficient for self defense. Many of these techniques would be disqualified in a competitive sporting environment. Siu Lum Kung Fu is not training for trophies; it is training for real world self defense. In a true life or death situation there are no rules or referees. One must do whatever is necessary to protect themselves and their family by ending the altercation quickly.
Q.) Does size or physical fitness level matter?
A.) Not necessarily. While there is a certain amount of physicality to each class, each student develops on their own and as time goes on they become more efficient in their movement. The training helps them to gain the physical qualities they need to be effective.
Q.) Where are you located? Is it safe?
A.) We are located 1 block north of Logan, between Salter and Arlington, at 755 Henry Ave.
The neighborhood is safe due to minimal foot traffic because of the industrial nature of the area.
